Tangents: a variation suite (1992)

Tangents

Tangents: a variation suite for piano (1992) is a set of variations each of which is melodically and harmonically based on a theme that is somewhat jazzy. The initial harmonic material is generated from an octatonic (diminished fifth) scale. The canon driving the principle of variation is a compositional style or technique that is unique to particular compositions by several selected composers. Composers chosen were Stravinsky, Bartok, Cowell and Davidovsky. Tangents was commissioned by the Kentucky Music Teachers Association Commissioning Program and was first premiered in Bowling Green, Kentucky.
