Piano Piece (1995)





Each of the three movements of Piano Piece for solo piano (1995) explores a “classic” form in a somewhat recycled and developed manner. Each of the three forms employed, normally relying on traditional tonal elements and schemes, is here constructed using other musical elements such as texture, rhythm and contrasting figurations. The work is best described as freely atonal with pitch material being generated from an octatonic scale. While articulation and tempo are used to separate the rondo parts in the first movement, texture and range are formalizing elements in the minuet and trio. The third movement, Sonatina, is so described because it contains more of a digression at the point where one would expect to hear a development section as in a Sonata. Each of the three movements is self-contained and, in spite of the suggested order, may be performed in any sequence.
