Cancoes para quatro Clarinets (for four clarinets, 2009) was written for clarinetists, Scott Locke, John Cippola, Connie Rhoades, and Dallas Tidwell. The work was written in advance of a March, 2009, performance by the quartet for the College Music Society and a performance in Portugal during the summer of 2009. The music utilizes - almost exclusively - the diminished fifth scale (octatonic) and motives derived from that scale form. The second song incorporates phrases from the Portuguese National Anthem to honor the premiere performance in that country.
