Festival Diversion (2002)

Festival Diversion

Festival Diversion for flute and piano (2002) began as a study for a movement that would later be included in a work for orchestra titled Sacred Valley Festival Suite. The optional electronic “bookends” for the work provide, for the listener, an opportunity to hear the genesis of the music. The “intro” and “outro” are excerpts recorded at a festival celebrating the Winter Solstice near Cusco, Peru. The Andean Quena (wooden flute) solo you hear served as the melodic and rhythmic inspiration for this Festival Diversion. The intent was not to recreate Peruvian folk music, but rather to the use melodic ideas in cooperation with an individual musical language to create a unique musical statement.
